kneeKAPS!

KRimmed with meat, this small, yet thick and strong bone has a taste of liquid smoke that will surely win you a drooling wink from your pooch.  The bone-joint from the hind leg of a cow, these bones are approximately 3″ long, weighing in at about 2.5oz.  Having a soft cartilage casing that will be consumed, the actual center bone is NOT intended for devouring, but rather for hours of gnawing action.  A great protein source, this treat is perfect for an aggressive chewer, promoting healthy teeth and gums. As with any bone, chew or treat, please monitor your dog and provide plenty of drinking water.  CHEWS WISELY, by making sure this bone is slightly bigger than your dogs mouth.

Justice for JERKY!

JNowadays, Jerky comes in many forms:

Pork, Goat, Lamb, Deer, Elk, Caribou, Kangaroo, Bison, Moose, Turkey, Ostrich, Salmon, Alligator, Tuna, Emu, Horse, Camel… (etc.)

And, I know this may sound stupid, but until recently, I wasn’t fully aware of how MODERN Jerky is made:

Modern manufactured jerky is normally marinated in a seasoned spice rub or liquid, and dried, dehydrated or smoked with low heat (usually under 70 °C/160 °F). Some makers still use just salt and sun-dry fresh sliced meat to make jerky.  Some product manufacturers finely grind meat, mix in seasonings, and press the meat-paste into flat shapes prior to drying. – Thank You Wikipedia! –

Being more familiar with traditional Jerky…

…A lean meat that has been trimmed of fat, cut into strips, and then dried to prevent spoilage. Normally, this drying includes the addition of salt, to prevent bacteria from developing on the meat before sufficient moisture has been removed.

It wasn’t until the on-going Jerky recall of pet treats, that I really started to pay attention.

There are many products in the marketplace which are sold as jerky which consist of highly processed, chopped and formed meat, rather than traditional sliced, whole-muscle meat.

Thankfully, I myself do not eat Jerky, but unfortunately, I know a lot of the stuff mentioned above, went into making pet treats.  Furthermore, according to the FDA:

A number of jerky pet treat products were removed from the market in January 2013 after a New York State lab reported finding evidence of up to six drugs in certain jerky pet treats made in China. While the levels of these drugs were very low and it’s unlikely that they caused the illnesses, FDA noted a decrease in reports of jerky-suspected illnesses after the products were removed from the market. FDA believes that the number of reports may have declined simply because fewer jerky treats were available.

Um, WHAT?! DRUGS?! Does this make any sense to you? Before I go off on a long and frustrated tangent, I think I’ll stop myself and keep this post short.  BUT, what I will say, is this:

At tha MUNCHbox, we focus on providing limited-ingredient treats that are MADE/SOURCED in the USA; with the exception that some of our treats may be sourced from Canada, Southern America, Australia and New Zealand (NO China).  The Chicken Strips and Tilapia Jerky that we carry, are pure dehydrated meat, with no additives, preservatives, hormones or chemicals (of any kind).  Both treats are made in Boston, by the GOOD folks at Polka Dog Bakery.

Better safe then sorry, we strongly encourage making your own treats, not only is it fun, but there are plenty of blogs that will provide recipes/information as to how – Check-Out Our Blog Post – DIY | Dehydrated GF Duck Treats.

If you don’t have the time…we completely understand.  Check out thaMUNCHbox.com!

We are in the process of procuring more Jerky treats that adhere to our high standards.  In All, we hope to give you more options to choose from and more yummy surprises for your dog via mail.

Himalayan Chews | tha Dog Cheese!

“Himalayan Dog Chew comes from an ancient recipe of the people of the Himalayas.  In the mountains at more than 15,000 feet, it is made using traditional methods with Yak and Cow Milk and all natural products and no chemicals or preservatives {No additives – 100% Authentic}”
Yak and Himalayan Dog Chew

Collected from rural community co-ops of the Himalayas in Eastern Nepal and the Mountains of West Bengal in India, Himalayan Dog Chews are made from Cows and Yaks raised in sheds, where no modern equipment or techniques are used in milking the animals.  Never introduced to hormones, prophylactic antibiotics, or other chemicals, these animals graze on open grasslands and are considered to be sacred life-givers.

Using a traditional method for human consumption, the Yak and Cow Milk is turned into hard cheese, which becomes a chew as hard as a regular bone, but softens after licking and/or gnawing for several minutes.  Recommended to keep in dry conditions, with an expiration date of approx. 4 years from the date of opening, these chews may give Antlers a run for their money.

Isn’t Milk, hence Cheese bad for dogs?

On the contrary, “positive reward-based obedience trainings often encourage the use of small pieces of cheese as motivators for behavior.”  Moreover, milk in its raw form is what’s difficult for dogs to digest. Yet, once it is made into cheese, the cooking process alters the protein making it more easily digestible… In actuality, most or all lactose is removed. The final product has little or no lactose to contribute towards the intollerance among dogs.

Worried about the salt and fat content?

The fat content is less than 1% of the whole product of Himalayan Dog Chew.

The amount of salt included in the creation of these chews is negligible. It is included by the people as a flavor enhancer, not for the flavor itself.

Fresh Fruit Salads for Dogs!

FNot an uncommon topic, I always knew dogs could eat fruit, but I never knew the many different kinds of fruit …

Apples – Bananas – Blueberries – Pears – Strawberries – Cantaloupe – Blackberries – Watermelon -Coconut – Raspberry – Oranges – Grapefruits – Mangos – pineapple …

With the exception of a few (grapes, raisins, apricots, peaches, raisins), the list can probably go on.  I honestly only fed my dog Apples, sometimes, Pears.

Overall, you can definitely get inspired when making fruit treats.  I have seen a bunch on Pinterest, like Raspberry Birthday Cakes…for Dogs. But, we at tha MUNCHbox, like to keep it simple.

Check Out this popular Quinoa Fruit Salad w/Honey Lime Dressing.

Yes! This recipe is for humans, which means, you guessed it… Sharing is Caring.  With Spring in the air and summer around the corner (we hope), the both of you can kick-back and enjoy a healthy, but delicious treat.  A simple Fruit Salad, another plus about this recipe, is that you can mix it up.

For Example:

If you don’t want Quinoa, then don’t add it…

If you or your dog prefers Pineapple to Mango, then use that instead (or both)…

Try Watermelon, Honeydew Melon and Cantaloupe…

Don’t just garnish with Mint, try Parsley or even Low Fat Whipped Cream…

For the dressing, add a beneficial teaspoon of Ginger to the Honey Lime Dressing…

See, the possibilities are endless.  But, remember to keep your dog in mind; No Grapes.

Now, if this is too much work for you, just throw everything in a blender, with some Unsweetened Peanut Butter or even Greek Non Fat Yogurt and VIOLA!  You got a smoothie, that you and your dog can lick up.

ESO’s | tha Esophagus Chew for Dogs!

Wizzler

An All-Natural, Single Ingredient Dog Chew, ESO’s are made from the ESOPHAGUS of a cow… tha food pipe!

High in Natural Chondroitin, these slender dehydrated chews are great for a dog’s joint health.  Approximately 6-7 inches in length and one inch wide, ESO’s are perfect for any size dog.  Similar to a Bull Pizzle, these chews have a smelly odor to them, which your pooch will enjoy (unfortunate for us), however, Eso’s are softer than a Bull Pizzle, so they probably won’t last as long.  As always, the chewing/gnawing action required prevents tarter buildup, promoting healthy teeth and gums.

To try an ESO, Check Out: thaMUNCHbox.com!

Note: As with any bone/chew or unfamiliar protein source, please MONITOR your dog and provide plenty of drinking water.

Happy Saturday,
