Protein

What Sets Us Apart? | Product Selection!

One of our values, is simple, healthy ingredients.  If you didn’t recognize this trend during the April A-to-Z blog Challenge (we blogged about Chew, Treats + Bones), no worries, we have made a category for this topic to browse though.  You can also check out the category, Chews, Treats + Bones…Oh My!

You see, we like and understand the idea of sticking to the canine (and feline) natural diet.  Yes, we know these beautiful domestic creatures have adapted over time, but we still think the  basics are crucial and necessary.  What do we mean by that?  Well, one of the things that a canine must have in their diet is…PROTEIN!  And we don’t mean the inappropriate protein from a veggie or plant source, we mean MEAT PROTEIN!  So although a our furry companions are not able to eat fresh killed meat, straight form the forest like their ancestors, we are able to provide them with other sources of meat protein, like Chicken, beef, Fish, Lamb (etc.).

On the other hand, one of the things that is NOT a crucial and necessary dietary need for a canine (or even a feline), is CARBS…even GRAINS (processed).

“the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract of carnivores-like lions, wolves, dogs, or cats-has not adapted in a way that allows the system of these animals to contend with processed grains.  Why then are those grains major ingredients in many pet foods?”             – The Royal Treatment –

Causes of the unhealthy pet epidemic, plaguing the life span of our pets (check out SlimDoggy’s Blog post Dog Life Spans), CARBS + GRAINS (processed) will be very scarce when sniffing around tha MUNCHbox.  When we say we value simple, healthy ingredients, we mean we focus on products that are essential and beneficial to our canine (and feline) diet. As mentioned, MEAT PROTEIN is key, so you will definitely find many shapes and forms of different meat proteins (like liver, lung + hearts), amongst our products.

Did you know that wild carnivores obtain fiber from the prey they eat.  Fiber which comes from fur, nails, fins, cartilage, hooves, feathers, teeth (etc.).  Although tha MUNCHbox doesn’t have any fur or feathers in stock (at least not at the moment), we certainly have HOOVES and TENDONS.  We also have SWEET PAWTATO CHIPS, which isn’t a “wild” fiber, but one our furry companions have adapted to.

Now, we know the issue of whether or not BONES should be consumed is a touchy subject.  But, we agree with the fact that bones serve as a natural toothbrush, great for canine dental hygiene.  I’d rather offer bones to gnaw on and tendons to chew on versus spending money on a toothbrush and nasty toothpaste (or even GREENIES), that doesn’t really do the job it’s suppose to do.

So in all, will you find the typical packaged Chews, Treats and Bones sold in a pet store like Petco and PetSmart amongst tha MUNCHbox products?

As previously mentioned, we focus on simple, healthy ingredient…limited ingredient Chews, Treats and Bones.  We like these products to be pure, all natural, slow roasted and dehydrated.  We don’t like carbs, processed grains, non-meat proteins, fillers, additives, or non-natural preservatives.

If you are all about yummy, healthy Chews, Treats and Bones for your canine (some of our products are feline approved), Check-Out thaMUNCHbox.com!

DinoBone

A Bite into Dino Bones:

All though these 17″ long bones are kept away for tha larger breeds, we think these bones are a great present for any size dog.  Made from real USDA Approved beef these bones are baked with a natural, savory-smokey flavor and are meant to last, offering long lasting gnawing action… without splintering.  Made in the USA, these X-Large bones can assist with eliminating boredom and stress relief/frustration, by teaching positive chewing behavior.  Reducing plaque and tarter buildup on teeth, as well as, relieving teething pain and toughening gums, these Dino’s are a great source of calcium and the soft marrow inside is a potent source of protein and emollients for GOOD health and Shiny Coats.

Skinz | Catfish, Cod + Salmon

Many are unaware of the nutritious benefits fish can bring to a dogs’ diet.  Sure, it may make them fart a bit more than usual, but isn’t that…well, healthy?

A great substitute for dogs with common protein allergies (beef, chicken, lamb), a diet with tasty FISH has been proven to:

1.) Bolster a Healthy Skin and Coat (Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids)
2.) Improve Digestion (Lean Protein)
3.) Perk-Up Joint Mobility (Anti-inflammatory – Great for Senior Dogs)
4.) Help in the Development of Vision and Brain Function (DHA/EPA – Great for Puppies)
5.) Boost Immune System (Natural Vitamins/Minerals)
6.) Prevent Cardiovascular/Heart Disease (Low in Saturated Fats and Meaningless Calories)

Like the zest of a lemon, the SKINS of FISH are are a nice way to reward your dog with healthy properties, without the risk of weight gain and/or a protein overload.  Best fed cooked, check out these dehydrated Cod Skins, Catfish Skins and Salmon Skins at thaMUNCHbox.com.

RAWESOME BONES!

What do we, at tha MUNCHbox, think about Raw Bones?

Well, the title of this post should clearly let you know.  But just in case you didn’t catch on, we think Raw Bones are…RAWESOME!

Not just providing more essential nutrient and minerals than processed bones, Raw Bones are also a smart substitute for struggling with your dog to brush their teeth.  Assisting with stimulating saliva enzymes, preventing plaque buildup and gum disease (especially in the upper back molars), and removing trapped food particles from in between teeth, a Raw Bone sure does make a RAWESOME after dinner treat.

Although Raw Bones are less prone to splinter, It is still wise to NOTE that not all dogs can have bones in general. Meant to be gnawed/chewed on, we do not recommend bones to dogs who prefer to chomp a bone into smaller chunks to swallow; this is why we think it is important to know what type of chewer your dog is.  Nevertheless, it’s best to always be in the surrounding area when you give your dog a bone, to monitor the intake.

Available in different shapes and sizes, with meatier being better than just bare, be sure to choose the right size bone for you dog.  As an example, when giving a raw bone to a small dog, be mindful that they have delicate teeth and jaws, so a big raw knuckle bone is probaley not best for them, but for a pit bull, this will definitley work.

Whether you give your RAWESOME bone frozen (nice summer treat to work at) or thawed out, remember, moderation is key.  Allowing your dog to chew/gnaw on a Raw Bone for an hour may prove to be too much for them, especially if they are known to have a sensitive stomach. If your dog is new to Raw Bones, Start with smaller time intervals, say 10-15 minutes and if your dog doesn’t experience an upset stomach, slowly increase the chew/gnaw time.  Likewise, a Raw Bone a day may be too much, but one every Friday, might be just right.

Pork PUM-PUMP-PUMPERS!

Great for dogs of all sizes, Pork Pumpers are, you guessed it…Pork Hearts!

Oven-baked to PAWFECTION, with no additives, hormones, preservatives or chemicals (of any kind), these LOW FAT, HIGH PROTEIN muscles will whole-heatedly make its way into any dogs heart. As with any chew or bone, these 4-6” long organs provide CHEWING/GNAWING action that promotes DENTAL HYGIENE.  Being a single-ingredient chew, Pumpers are a brilliant alternative for dogs who are sensitive to other common proteins, like Chicken, Beef and/or Lamb.  Although some may claim Pork to be bad, we think it’s a great meat/protein to rotate into your dogs diet to BOOST their immune system.

Looking to try a Pork PUM-PUMP-PUMPER? Well then, what are you waiting for… Check-Out thaMUNCHbox.com!

Organic Pumpkin + Turkey Meatballs | Nummy Tum-Tum!

Embracing the term ORGANIC, we decided to make Yummy Turkey Meatballs, with 100% smooth ORGANIC Pumpkin Puree by Nummy Tum-Tum.

photo-28Inspired by the Homemade Turkey and Sweet Potato Meatball recipe on PetCouponSavings.com, this Affordable and Easy recipe will definitely be common in our kitchen.  Just Swapping out Sweet Potato for ORGANIC Pumpkin Puree (1/2 can), and adding 1 teaspoon of OLIVE OIL (for skin + coat health), we followed the recipe step-by-step and as the sweet smell of ORGANIC Pumpkin rised from our oven, we were so tempted to pop one or two in our mouths (non-meat eater over here).  Our Midget Poop Ballou has already devoured three so far.  We are happy to say that we only used half of the batch mixture and have deep freezed the rest for future meals/treats.  No doubt, we plan on using this recipe as a base/inspiration for others, like, Apple + Turkey Meatballs (Ballou just loves him some apple).
